Reversing Trailers

Before reversing, get out of the vehicle and check that all is clear to the rear before making the manoeuvre.

Be on the lookout for children and pedestrians. If possible, get someone to watch while the manoeuvre is made.

WARNING!! Never reverse a trailer without checking behind because of the huge blind spot. Ideally, have someone see you back, especially in crowded places.

Reversing a trailer is a skill that can be mastered with a little perseverance by anyone who has learned the basic theory. Find somewhere with plenty of space and keep trying until you get it right. It helps to have someone who knows how to do it to tell you where you are going wrong

When reversing, you start the trailer turning by steering the opposite way to the direction you want the rear of the trailer to go.

Once the trailer is going in the desired direction you have to steer back the other way whilst still reversing, or it will carry on tightening its turn until it jack-knifes. It is easier to add more steering than to correct too much. If the combination jack-knifes you must pull forwards to straighten it otherwise this condition can damage the towing vehicle.

Eventually you will need to start steering the other way whilst still reversing, to bring the towing vehicle's front round so that the towing vehicle follows the trailer, keep an eye on where the trailer is going encase it needs correction.  The point at which you change steering direction and the amount of steering movement required to keep it straight is something you can only learn through practice.

It is best to practice reversing in a straight line using the mirrors only, because it is easiest, reverse slowly and carefully, when more of the trailer appears in one mirror than the other, turn the top of the steering wheel towards that mirror. It is better to make small steering movements than risk over correction.

Once you have mastered reversing in a straight line practice reversing to the right, once you have mastered this then attempt reversing to the left, it might make sense to practice at a location away from hazards. If necessary ask for assistance by someone observing outside of the vehicle. Do not attempt the test manoeuvres until you're confident you have control over the combination.

Do not get stuck in reverse, if the trailer goes out of line, it may be easier to pull forwards to correct it.

Remember practice makes perfect.
